High School sailing closely parallels the collegiate sailing format. For fleet racing, teams are divided into A and B divisions comprising of different skippers and crews for each division. A team may substitute sailors as long as prescribe substitution rules are followed. Courses tend to be relatively short emphasizing starts and tactics. Teams also participate in Team Racing events where each team fields three boats to sail against three boats from another team. In team racing teammates work together to outmaneuver the other team so that their combined race scores are better than the other team’s combined scores.

Charleston sailing teams are part of the South-Atlantic Scholastic Sailing Association (SAISA) District. Teams participate in a number of regattas throughout the seasons which run from September to November and March to May. The end of each season culminates in a District Championship and in the spring, for those teams that qualify, the National Fleet Racing Championship (Mallory Cup) and National Team Racing Championship (Baker Cup).

Teams attend local events and travel to venues requiring overnight stays several times a season. Organization of all local and overnight trips is the responsibility of team captains and parents.

The following High Schools train at CCS: Academic Magnet, Ashley Hall, Bishop England, First Baptist, James Island Charter School, Porter-Gaud, Wando & West Ashley.

About Summer Sailing

Charleston Community Sailing has a great reputation of excellent summer sailing programs. This summer, we will continue to offer one of the best sailing programs in South Carolina. We teach classes to Junior sailors ages 10-18 in all levels of sailing instruction from beginner sailor to advanced racer.

The Executive Director and the Board have been working hard to ensure that Charleston Community Sailing provides a fun and rewarding experience for all young sailors whether they are first time students, a returning “veteran”, or an experienced racer looking to compete at the highest levels.

WHAT WE SAIL: VANGUARD 420
Ideal for crews ranging in size from 220-310 lbs., the 420 is manageable for sailors coming out of the Optimist class and enables young sailors to learn teamwork skills that simply can”t be learned in single-handed boats. Charleston Community Sailing Inc. has a fleet of 13 competitive 420s for use in the summer program, all of which are less than 5 years old. The 420 is simple and safe for beginning sailors and yet quick enough to keep collegiate All-Americans interested.

WHAT TO BRING:
Wear a bathing suit and/or clothes & closed toed shoes that can get wet
Bring towel & a change of clothes

The regatta took place in Midway Georgia / Sunbury. Racing was planned to take place on the waters adjacent to the Sunbury Crab Company. The day began with very glassy conditions and a postponement was sounded at 9:00am. At 11:05 the postponement was lifted as a very light Southwest breeze was developing in the Medway River. Teams were transported to the public ramp to rig and launch boats. A division had two or three starts with races abandoned before they completed two successful light wind races. B division was transported to the open water sight by boat and the transfer took place on the water. 10 Races were competed in all. Conditions improved as the day went on. All rotations took place on the water with sailors transported back to the Sunbury Crab Company Dock. The last B division race was competed just prior to 5 pm. Thank you to all the competitors for being so patient with tough conditions. Rotations on the water went very well.
