As junior programs around town finished their summer sailing programs, young sailors and parents alike may be wondering when they can sail again. Charleston is currently home to nine high school sailing teams and will be adding middle schools to the list of teams this Fall.
The sailing center will officially open to teams starting on Monday August 29th with CCS hosting the first SAISA points regatta on September 10th. For teams that are not eligible to compete in high school events, there are a plethora of events for younger sailors to compete in via SAYRA. We are looking forward to a great season after meeting with all the area coaches and discussing the Fall schedule.

Once again we are planning a dance for all the area youth sailors and their friends. We will have a DJ so bring your requests and please share the event with your friends!
Charleston Community Sailing is currently holding its 2011 summer session of sailing programs. Our final classes include:
Beginner Sailing: July 25-August 5
High School Race Clinic: August 1-12
FUN SAILING: August 8-12
Our annual summer sailing program seeks to promote water and sailing education for children of all ages. No experience is needed! Whether your child has grown up on the water or just wants to experience the thrill of being on a sailboat, our various classes are catered to all skill levels!
We are excited to say that all slots for the New 2011 Guppy Program have been filled. This program was created specifically for 5-7 year olds. We want to help children gain a love for the seas at a young age, so that they will grow up understanding the value of life on the water.
As a special thank you to all of our hard working kids, Charleston Community Sailing will be holding its 2nd Annual Summer Dance at the Charleston Yacht Club on Friday, August 12th. Kids, get ready for an evening of dancing under the warm summer lights in the Flag Room! You might even win one of our mystery prizes during the raffle! All donations toward this event are greatly appreciated and can be sent to Charleston Community Sailing.
If you have any questions about how to send a gift, please contact Executive Director Jessica Koenig at 843.607.4890. We look forward to sailing with you!
This weekend is the 7th Annual Special Olympics Open Regatta hosted by James Island Yacht Club and Charleston Community Sailing. There are 24 teams coming to compete from Charleston, Alabama and Georgia with athletes ranging from ages 8-40 yrs. old. Our team has been practicing for two months and three people
competing this weekend and Special Olympics Head Coach Meta Frasch are preparing for the World Games in Greece in two weeks. “My son is also involved with the team and will be competing in Greece, so to have my son by my side experiencing the ceremonies, meeting fellow people from all over the world and making new friendships and memories – is a dream come true for me.” says Meta Frasch.
The South Carolina Special Olympics Sailing Team launched in 2005 and our athletes compete in regional events spanning the southeast. Special Olympics is a program of sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. There are different levels that the athlete can strive toward:
Level 1: Athlete controls the jib and the unified partner steers and controls the main sail
Level 2: Athlete steers 100% of the race and the unified partner controls the sails and verbally assists the athlete
Level 3: Two athletes on the boat, steering and controlling the sails with a safety officer.
All activities will take place from James Island Yacht Club and opening ceremonies start Friday June 3rd starting at 8:00pm. There will be a water born torch lighting ceremony with boats and helicopters coming across the harbor with fireworks to follow. The regatta will be run in Collegiate 420s and Hobie 16s and racing takes place Friday – Sunday starting at 10:30 am each day. The event is open to everyone, so come by James Island Yacht Club, to meet the team, watch some sailing or for the fireworks on Friday.
